List of Requirements for Potential Trainings

As required by The NYS Department of Education to Provide CE hours for Social Workers

Thank you for submitting a proposal for consideration.

Please keep in mind that in order to be considered for continuing education hours (CE hours), the NYS Department of Education requires all trainings to be of graduate level. All trainers need to have at least a graduate level education or above and be licensed in the field they will be presenting in. The presentation needs to fall within the scope of one’s license, i.e. a nutritionist cannot present on the mental health treatment of eating disorders.

We ask that your proposals follow the outline below. This outline is in compliance with the NYS Dept. of Education regulations and the outline format makes it easier for the Institute to review your proposal. The proposals that have been accepted are usually about 2-4 pages long.

Training Proposal for the Trauma Insitute of Orange County #0028

  1. An exact workshop title:
  2. Subject/topic of the course/educational activity (1-2 paragraphs): Please provide a brief summary/overview of the training being proposed. This is the place to indicate why the training is relevant? Is it evidence based? Is it an emerging topic? Is there a community need etc.? It should be a general, broad narrative about what the overall plan is.
  3. Names and Qualifications of the presenter (1-2 paragraphs): This is the place where you review your qualifications to present on the proposed topic and may include educational and professional experience. We will need a separate copy of your resume and license; please send that along with the proposal as an attachment to the e mail to octraumainstitute@orangecountygov.com    If your proposal is accepted, this section will form the basis for our ‘About the Presenter’ section of our flyer.
  4. Description of the course/educational activity content (1-2 pages). Outline format please. It can be challenging to understand exactly what a training will be about when it is presented as a narrative. It is also harder to approve if reviewers aren’t clear about EXACTLY what you plan to present. This section is the most important portion of the proposal and is an outline of what the training will be. Please be specific about that topic/s you will be teaching. What will participants be learning?

The following is an example of the format and level of explanation we are requesting:

      A.  Participants will be taught some of the common cognitive distortion styles in order to help learn how to recognize it in both their clients and in themselves. This will set the stage to teach participants how to respond with a CBT approach. For example:

      1. Black and white thinking: Examples will be given for different age groups and for different situations. The emphasis will be on recognizing black and white thinking in clinical situations, work/school situations, personal/family life etc.
      2. Catastrophizing: Examples will be given for different age groups and for different situations. A discussion will ensue about how to respond to each age group e.g.; Because of brain development, children and adolescents will need different interventions than a middle age person. The same could be true for an elderly person with possible dementia onset issues.
      3. Minimization and Denial: Examples will be given for different age groups and for different situations. There will be an exploration of when minimization and/or denial is dysfunctional and or chronic, and when it might be adaptive e.g.; in a Trauma situation. Participants will be taught how to recognize the difference
      4. And on……

  5. Location Date and Time: Please leave blank as this will be determined later based on approval and availability.
  6. Proposed start and end time: One CE hour will be offered for each 53 minutes of teaching.
  7. Description of the teaching methods to be used:  Lecture, video, interactive exercises, etc.
  8. Learning objectives of the course: Please list 4-6 measurable objectives. What can participants expect to learn from this training? These will be used to develop the state required evaluation form which all participants will complete. Examples:
    • Participants will be able to list and understand 4-6 different cognitive distortion styles
    • Participants will understand and be able to assess whether the cognitive distortion style is adaptive or mal adaptive
    • Participants will be able to devise an intervention/ response to client’s cognitive distortions in a way that is helpful and healing for the client.
    • Participants will learn 3-5 ways that they can present the CBT theories to clients’ in a way that the clients’ themselves will be able teach others to recognize a pattern of cognitive distortions.
  9. Research Citations: : Please include any relevant research that is helpful in understanding your proposal. Hyperlinks included in the proposal allow for easy accessibility for those researching and approving the workshop.
