The Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Fire Services is the Fire Coordinator of Orange County.  The Deputy Commisioner is responsible for providing training, coordination and resources for the Fire Services of the county. This is accomplished through administration of County and State Fire Training programs, administration of the Orange County Fire Mutual Aid Plan, providing technical resources in the form of Fire Investigation & Hazardous Materials response, Fire Prevention Programs and maintaining liaison with all emergency response agencies of Orange County and adjacent states and counties, the Fire Advisory Board, Executive & Legislative branches of County Government and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention & Control.  Every county in New York State has a County Fire Coordinator, with the exception of New York City, where the Fire Commissioner is also the Fire Coordinator.

Within guidelines of the Laws of the State of New York, the Fire Coordinator and staff cannot assume command of any incident. Their roles are support, resources and coordination. The local Fire Chief always retains command of the incident.

Under the Deputy Commissioner of Fire Services are the Deputy Fire Coordinators, Orange County Fire Training Center, Orange County Fire Investigation Unit and Orange County Hazardous Materials Response Team. In addition, the Deputy Commissioner of Fire Services is responsible for conducting fire safety inspections of county controlled buildings & property and upon request may conduct fire safety inspections in school buildings. Upon activation of the New York State Fire Mobilization and Mutual Aid Plan, the Deputy Commissioner of Fire Services becomes the Regional Fire Administrator and carries out the responsibilities of coordination, tracking and deployment of resources and equipment from Orange County to the effected region(s) of New York State.
