07-02-04 Orange County Extends Tire Collection for Two More Weeks
Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana has extended the County’s free tire collection until the 17th of July. Executive Diana says “ The collection of old tires during the month of June was very successful and since old tires are a primary breeding ground for mosquitoes, we are extending the period for free collection”.
Residents can bring tires to all three transfer station sites, New Hampton, Port Jervis and Newburgh during regular business hours. The stations will be closed Monday, July 5th for the holiday. There is a limit of five (5) tires per resident and the tires must be 17” or smaller in size and off the rims.
MUNICIPALITIES who wish to take advantage of this program can do so at no charge for normal sized tires off rims. Tires from municipalities MUST BE brought to the Solid Waste Management Facility in New Hampton ONLY! For large quantities, you must call ahead to make arrangements.
BUSINESSES who wish to take advantage of this collection can do so at a reduced rate of $75 per ton for normal sized tires off rim. Tires from businesses MUST BE brought to the Solid Waste Management Facility in New Hampton ONLY! For large quantities, call ahead to make arrangements.
Remember, West Nile season is quickly approaching. Check around your home for any areas where water could accumulate and sit stagnant. Check screens for holes and clean gutters on rooftops. Mosquitoes are most prevalent at dawn and dusk but can be out during the daytime, so wear protective clothing and repellents. All municipalities still have free bug repellent available for residents to use against mosquitoes.
Also, the reporting of dead birds helps to forecast the chances of people becoming infected with West Nile Virus. Dead birds can be called into the Health Department at (845) 291-2331. Since the body of the bird tends to break down quickly, please double wrap the bird and keep it cool. Not all birds will be tested. To dispose of a bird, use a shovel or wear gloves to bag the bird and put it in the trash, or bury it at least three feet deep, away from a stream or other water source.
