Transportation and Transit

The Orange County Planning Department is very involved with transportation through its staff support for the Orange County Transportation Council (OCTC) and its transit system coordination in the county, including the distribution of transit operating assistance and the acquisition of buses. OCTC is the “Metropolitan Planning Organization” or MPO for Orange County. As a condition for receiving Federal transportation funding, the designated MPO must carry out certain transportation planning functions and must develop a transportation capital improvement program. The three main products of this work are the Unified Planning Work Program (annual), Long Range Transportation Plan (every four years) and the Transportation Improvement Program (every two years). Planning funding received from the Federal government (via New York State) helps to carry out other planning studies, such as the Southeast Orange County Traffic and Land Use Study.
