Local Emergency Planning Committee of Orange County
MISSION STATEMENT The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) of Orange County works to enhance community awareness of hazards in their area, review emergency plans in case of accidental release, ensure coordination with responsible agencies and look for ways to prevent incidents. _____________________________________________________________________________ Founded in 1987 in response to the Bhopal, India chemical disaster, the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) is an organization of industrial, governmental and citizen groups whose purpose is to provide a forum in which the local community and facilities can discuss issues related to hazardous substances.
The objectives of the LEPC of Orange County include:
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive emergency plan for the community.
- Receive information about accidental chemical releases.
- Update annually the information about chemicals stored or used by local facilities (through the collection of the Tier II reporting forms).
- Collect, manage and provide public access to information on hazardous chemicals in the area, as well as support the local fire department and emergency response teams.
- Educate the public about risks from accidental and routine releases of chemicals and work with facilities to minimize risks.
