The Office of the Orange County Historian and the Orange County Genealogical Society maintain a list of cemeteries in Orange County. There are over 900 cemeteries documented within the County boundaries.
The task of caring for the cemeteries often falls on volunteers, some of whom help out through their local church or some through non-profit cemetery boards. Some cemeteries are on private property and others have reverted to the ownership of the town or city municipality.
In an attempt to provide resources and guidance to those who care for cemeteries, we offer sponsored gravestone cleaning workshops through the Office of the Orange County Historian. If you would like to participate as a trainee or if you are involved with a cemetery where the volunteers could benefit from our training class, please contact us.
If you are planning to clean gravestones on your own, please note that the National Park Service recommends ONLY the use of water, D2 Biological Solution and plastic or wooden tools for contact with the stone.
