Farmland Preservation

Open Space Fund

Orange County funded land preservation projects from 2005 until 2007 through its Open Space Fund Program, which offered up to 50% matching funds for land protection. Through conservation easements or acquisition projects, this Program helped to protect 2,616 acres of land, including 2,308 acres of active farmland. The farmland preservation map (PDF) shows farms that have been protected through the County’s Open Space fund or have a conservation easement held by a municipality or land trust.

Purchase of Development Rights

As well, several municipalities in Orange County have provided or currently provide funding for purchase of development rights (PDR). The Town of Warwick has been particularly successful at PDR due to revenue received through a 0.75% real estate transfer tax that directly funds farmland preservation projects.
