The mission of the Orange County Department of Planning is to protect and enhance the quality of life of Orange County residents by providing technical assistance and guidance concerning land use and transportation planning, sustainable development and environmental protection principles promoted in the various policy and references documents prepared by local, County, State an Federal Agencies.

New York State General Municipal Law requires that certain municipal planning, zoning and subdivision actions be referred for County Planning agency review before local action can occur.
The Orange County Planning Board advises OCDP staff on major planning studies and initiatives, including the update of the Orange Comprehensive Plan Strategies for Quality Communities, the OC Open space Plan, the OC Design Guide and OC Housing Needs Study.
Orange County Municipal Planning Federation (OCMPF) established in 1974, provides educational programs and information on planning, zoning, land use and related topics.
There is a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
