Trauma Institute of Orange County

About Us

Trauma-informed care is an approach to supporting people impacted by trauma that acknowledges the presence of trauma symptoms and the role that trauma has played in their lives. Service providers from all disciplines - medical and mental health, law enforcement, the courts, education, child welfare, and advocacy - can offer trauma-informed services. Becoming trauma-informed is a process that involves striving towards a new way of understanding people and providing services and supports.

The Orange County Trauma Institute began as an initiative more than a decade ago. Through the continued support of the Orange County Government and under the leadership of the Commissioner of Social Services and Mental Health, Darcie Miller, the institute continues to help foster a comprehensive community response to trauma.

The Trauma Institute is a collaboration of representatives from mental health and human service agencies, as well as private practitioners, throughout the county who meet each month with a goal of enriching the service delivery system’s current competency in addressing the needs of trauma survivors through case consultation, the development and facilitation of training opportunities, as well as the dissemination of information.
