District Attorney Hoovler Announces Guilty Plea
In City of Newburgh Stabbing Homicide
Defendant Killed Victim by Stabbing Him Multiple Times
Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler, on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, announced the guilty plea in Orange County Court of Tavares Stackhouse, age 39, of the City of Newburgh, in connection with a June 27, 2020, City of Newburgh stabbing homicide. Stackhouse pled guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree, and faces up to 21 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision when he is sentenced on September 7, 2021, before Orange County Court Judge Robert J. Prisco.
On the afternoon of June 27, 2020, after a brief altercation involving the victim and a third party, Stackhouse followed the victim to the entrance of the City of Newburgh Aquatic Center, located on the corner of Route 9W and Washington Street. There, Tavares stabbed the victim numerous times around his body, causing the victim’s death. Several citizens attempted life-saving efforts on the victim, to no avail.
District Attorney Hoovler thanked the City of Newburgh Police Department for their assistance in the investigation and the prosecution of the case.
“Senseless violence on our streets cannot be tolerated,” said District Attorney Hoovler, “and my Office will do everything that we can to hold accountable those who commit acts of violence, with knives, with guns, or with no weapons at all. As a result of this plea, the defendant will receive some measure of the punishment that he deserves, the victim will receive some measure of justice for his death, and society will be sent the assurance that violent actions will not be condoned.”
The case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Richard Moran and Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Mangold.
A criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York's burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
