District Attorney Hoovler Announces Indictment
in Attempted Murder Case
City of Newburgh Woman Indicted for Attempted Murder in Knife Attack
Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Monday, July 19, 2021, an Orange County Grand Jury handed up an indictment charging Ariana Sanchez, 22, of Newburgh, with crimes including Attempted Murder in the Second Degree. The charges were in connection with stabbing of a woman in the City of Newburgh.
The indictment charges Sanchez with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree and Criminal Possession Weapon in the Fourth Degree. It is alleged that on June 19, 2021, at approximately 1:45 PM, Sanchez repeatedly stabbed another woman multiple times, including in the chest, back and leg. The confrontation between the defendant and the victim is alleged to have occurred in the vicinity of Lake Street, in the City of Newburgh. Following the attack, the victim was admitted to St. Luke’s hospital, Police are investigating whether the confrontation concerned a man. Anyone with information concerning the incident is urged to contact the City of Newburgh Police Department.
Sanchez was arrested by the City of Newburgh Police Department on July 13, 2021, after an investigation of the incident. Sanchez is currently being held in Orange County Jail in lieu of bail that had been set in the amount of $100,000 cash or $100,000 partially secured bond or $250,000 unsecured bond. It is expected that Sanchez will be arraigned in Orange County Court in connection with the indictment.
Sanchez faces 25 years in prison on the charge of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree.
District Attorney Hoovler thanked City of Newburgh Police Department for their investigation and the apprehension of Sanchez.
“Those who use weapons and violence to settle disputes deserve severe punishment,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “I commend the City of Newburgh Police Department for their investigation in this case. Violence on our streets, whether from knives or guns, can simply not be tolerated. My office will continue to seek lengthy prison terms for those who engage in such violence.”
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Christine Maggiore.
This criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
