District Attorney Hoovler Announces Guilty Plea
In Town of Newburgh Stabbing Case
Defendant Pleads Guilty to Assault in the First Degree
District Attorney to Recommend 8 Years in Prison
Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Tuesday, December 15, 2021, Miles Peterson, 25, of Newburgh, pleaded guilty to Assault in the First Degree before Orange County Court Judge Craig Stephen. Brown. The plea was in connection with the stabbing of a woman on Travis Lane in the Town of Newburgh on June 21, 2021.
At the time that he pleaded guilty, Peterson admitted to stabbing the woman on Travis Lane multiple times, causing the victim to suffer serious physical injuries. Pursuant to the plea agreement placed on the record at the time Peterson pleaded guilty, the District Attorney’s Office will recommend that Peterson be sentenced to eight years in state prison and five years post-release supervision when he is sentenced on February 1, 2022.
District Attorney Hoovler thanked the Town of Newburgh Police Department.
“Those who use violence and weapons to settle disputes deserve meaningful state prison sentences,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “Those tempted to engage in violence in Orange County must understand that if they commit a serious offense, they will not be able to escape just punishment.”
The case is being prosecuted by Executive Assistant District Attorney Michael Milza.
This criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
