District Attorney Hoovler Announces Training for

Law Enforcement on Trademark Counterfeiting

Training for Police Officers and Assistant District Attorneys

In Recognizing Counterfeit Goods and Investigating and

Prosecuting Cases That Involve those Goods

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced on Wednesday, March 2, 2018, that his office will be sponsoring a training opportunity for law enforcement officers in the recognition, investigation, and prosecution of trademark counterfeiting. The training is being offered in cooperation with the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition (IACC), and is scheduled to take place on March 15, 2018, at the Orange County Emergency Services Center in Goshen. The training is free, and all Orange County law enforcement officers are invited to attend. 

The training will bring together experts from around the country on trademark counterfeiting and its investigation and prosecution. The training will cover the basics of trademark counterfeiting operations; trademark counterfeiting investigations and enforcement, including online investigations; and some special considerations regarding consumer goods and prescription drugs. Vendors from around the country will be on hand with examples of counterfeit goods and information about what law enforcement can do to recognize counterfeit goods.

“Counterfeiting of trademarked products affects all of us,” said District Attorney Hoovler, “primarily in the form of higher prices that manufacturers must charge to make the profit that they’re entitled to from those products. Those who deal in counterfeit goods steal from all of us, not just from the legitimate manufacturers. More importantly, dealers in counterfeit prescription drugs actually put people’s lives at risk. I hope that this training may give Orange County law enforcement officers and agencies some of tools that they can use to recognize counterfeit goods and to investigate trademark counterfeiters, so that those illegal operations can be taken down.”
