[ARCHIVED] Orange County provides active shooter awareness training to local businesses and educators

activeshooter8-2-2022

Goshen, N.Y. – The Orange County Sheriff’s Office held a free training on active shooter awareness for local businesses on Tuesday, August 2nd at the Emergency Services Center in Goshen.

Approximately 150 people attended the event, which was co-hosted by the Sheriff’s Office’s Special Operations Group and the Orange County Chamber of Commerce.

“It is an unfortunate fact that in this day and age we have to think about what to do in an active shooter situation,” Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus said. “While we hope no one will ever need to utilize this training, as County officials we want to make sure you possess the knowledge and information to help you survive, and keep others safe, should you find yourself in an active shooter situation.”

The program educated attendees on how to recognize signs of potential workplace violence, how to respond to an active shooting or other violent situations and helped created an emergency action plan.

“The group that attended served as a reflection of the entire community,” stated Orange County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Heather Bell-Meyer. “This is a difficult, but unfortunately necessary topic to discuss. We thank County Executive Neuhaus and the Sheriff’s Office for hosting this training that can help save lives.”

“We cannot be complacent and we need to accept that this type of unfortunate event can happen here,” said Orange County Sheriff Carl E. DuBois.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office encourages county residents to take advantage of the Active Shooter/Hostile Event program they continue to offer to the public at no cost.
