District Attorney Hoovler Announces Guilty Plea in
Greenwood Lake Child Rape Case

Defendant Admitted to Raping Two Teenage Girls in 2007 and 2011

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, that Nicholas McAteer, age 46, of Greenwood Lake, pled guilty to two counts of Rape in the First Degree, in connection with his 2007 and 2011 rapes of two teenage girls. Under the terms of his plea agreement, McAteer faces up to eighteen years in prison when he is sentenced on June 13, 2018, before County Court Judge William DeProspo.

At the time of his guilty plea, McAteer admitted to the forcible rape of the two girls. McAteer raped the first girl in 2007, when the girl was eighteen years old. The second girl was fifteen years old when McAteer raped her in 2011. The charges that McAteer pled guilty to satisfied an 82-count indictment, involving a series of sexual offenses that he committed against both girls over a number of years.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the Greenwood Lake Police Department for its efforts in the investigation and prosecution of the case.

“Sex offenses destroy people’s lives,” said District Attorney Hoovler, “and that is especially true when the victims are young people. My office has made it a priority to deal seriously with sex offenses, including those involving children. Through the plea that we announce today, the defendant’s victims will receive some measure of justice and, I hope, closure, for the series of acts that the defendant committed against them.”

District Attorney Hoovler commended Senior Assistant District Attorney Michael Milza for his prosecution of the case.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
