Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus has recognized Steve Heater as the Citizen of the Month Award winner for the month of April.

Neuhaus selected Heater, who works for the County’s Department of Public Works as a Highway Supervisor of Road Maintenance, for selflessly volunteering at the Promenade Assisted Living Community in Middletown.

“Through his service, Steve Heater has had a positive impact on hundreds of residents at Promenade,” Neuhaus said. “His contributions are to be commended and we all appreciate his dedication to the Promenade community. Steve’s volunteerism has served as a bright spot in the lives of the seniors at the assisted living community. We are proud that Steve is part of Orange County’s workforce.”

Heater, 57, began volunteering at Promenade six years ago and is affectionately known by many residents as “Big Steve” or “Donut Steve.” He often brings donuts and pizza to them on his visits. Heater, who previously worked at Promenade for 10 years as a security guard, hosts bingo games for residents and assists Promenade staff with its annual carnival, volunteering to be the first person in the dunk tank.

He is also part of the Promenade Senior Stars, which is dedicated to raising funds for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Heater restores cars in his spare time and is working with Promenade to organize its annual Oldies but Goodies Car Show in September. The event is a benefit for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

“I am very proud to receive this recognition from County Executive Neuhaus,” Heater said. “My work at Promenade is very important to me and I’m thankful that I have a chance to work with the residents. They sometimes tell me that I make their day when I show up, but they really make mine.”

Neuhaus introduced his Citizen of the Month Award, which acknowledges outstanding Orange County residents, in January of 2017.
