District Attorney Hoovler Encourages Public to Attend

2018 Law Enforcement Memorial Service

Honoring Law Enforcement Officers Who Died in the Line of Duty

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler encouraged all of Orange County citizens and law enforcement officers to attend the upcoming 2018 Orange County Law Enforcement Memorial Service. The annual event, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Jason Conklin Memorial Lodge #957, honors Orange County law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty, and whose names have been enshrined on two memorial walls outside the Orange County Courthouse in Goshen. The service will be held on Friday, May 4, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., at the entrance to the Courthouse.

At this year's service, the FOP will be adding the names of New York City Police Department Detectives Thomas F. Weiner and Christopher Strucker, who both died from World Trade Center-related illnesses and whose deaths were subsequently designated line of duty by their department. Both detectives were Orange County residents and were first responders to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. They also performed duties related to the search and recovery effort at Ground Zero in the days and months following the attack.

The memorial service will also honor the memory of the 30 members of the Orange County law enforcement community that have made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as their families and the loved ones they left behind.

“Law enforcement officers risk their lives every day, to keep us all safe,” said District Attorney Hoovler, “and, as a former police officer, I understand just what that risk entails. It is our duty to honor those brave men and women who perform their duty by putting on a uniform for us, while they are alive, and certainly after they have paid the ultimate price for our benefit. I urge all of Orange County’s citizens to come out to the 2018 Orange County Law Enforcement Memorial Service, and to participate in other events honoring our law enforcement officers during Police Week, which begins on May 13, 2018.”

The service will last approximately one hour, and is open to all members of the law enforcement community and to the general public. A reception will be held in the courthouse lobby after the service.
