Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County is honoring its veterans this summer through the state’s Veterans Fresh Connect coupon program.
Veterans, service members and their immediate family members are eligible for 10 Fresh Connect Checks valued at $2 each ($20 total) to use at some of the County’s farmers markets. Many of the County’s outdoor summer farmers markets are now open weekly for the growing season. More markets will begin operating in the coming weeks and most will remain open through October.
There are more than a dozen summer farmers markets spread throughout Orange County, from Port Jervis to Newburgh and almost every municipality in between.
“I’m proud that Orange County is recognizing veterans with the Fresh Connect vouchers,” Neuhaus said. “It is a great way to help veterans and thank them for everything they have done for our country. It is also a wonderful way to support the agricultural community.”
Veterans are eligible for one set of vouchers, which helps not only to stretch a food budget, but also adds much needed fresh fruits and vegetables to the table. Vouchers can be picked up at the Goshen Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 15th and July 20. The vouchers will be available at the Cornwall Farmers Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 27th and July 25th, and Monroe Museum Village Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 20th and July 18th.
“The state’s Fresh Connect food program is a wonderful way for veterans to sample some of the great fresh food being produced by Orange County farms at reduced cost,” said Christian Farrell, the County’s Veterans Service Agency (VSA) Director. “We will continue to add more dates and locations more of the County’s veterans can take advantage of this program.”
Orange County’s farmers markets offer local fruits and vegetables, along with prepared foods, wines, honey, flowers, and everything from meats to quiches. Each market has its own individual character with unique offerings and vendors who take pride in their homegrown products.
