Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus has recognized Bill Scully as the Citizen of the Month Award winner for the month of July.
Scully, 74, was recognized for his volunteerism and dedication to the Monroe community for almost 50 years. He has also served in the Army National Guard and is a veteran of both the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).
“Bill has always had a vested interest in Monroe and its residents,” Neuhaus said. “He has especially made an impact as a volunteer Little League baseball coach and a Pop Warner football coach. Coach Scully has had a positive impact on thousands of young athletes and their families. Everyone knows Coach Scully and everyone respects and appreciates him. Bill often works behind the scenes, but deserves to be recognized.”
Scully, an Orange County resident since 1970, is the President of Monroe-Woodbury Pop Warner, a feeder program for the High School’s successful varsity team. He has coached and served in a variety of other capacities with Pop Warner for 49 years. Scully also coached with Monroe-Woodbury Little League in the 1980s and has served on the Board of Directors of the Michael J. Finnegan scholarship golf outing, which was considered the largest, privately funded scholarship in the state. It was awarded to Monroe-Woodbury football players displaying excellence in the classroom, on the field and in the community. Scully also volunteers with the Town of Monroe’s Meals on Wheels program.
Scully moved to Highland Mills from New York City in 1970 and relocated to the Town of Monroe in 1978. He was a member of the NYPD from 1965-69 and worked for the FDNY from 1969-77. Scully served with the Army National Guard’s 165th Infantry Division from 1965-69.
“I prefer to stay in the background, but I do appreciate that County Executive Neuhaus has chosen to recognize me with this award,” Scully said. “I’m truly humbled. Working in the community gives me joy and this recognition would not be possible without the help of so many hard-working people. Monroe is very important to me and I’m thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to work with so many residents over the years.”
Neuhaus introduced his Citizen of the Month Award, which acknowledges outstanding Orange County residents, in January of 2017.
