Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus announced on Wednesday that State Senator John Bonacic has secured a $250,000 grant to enhance the County’s Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
“I want to thank Senator Bonacic for his unwavering support of both Orange County’s and New York State’s veterans communities,” Neuhaus said. “This grant allows us to continue the work of improving our veterans cemetery, which I believe is one of the most distinguished in the State. Orange County’s commitment to those who serve and providing them with dignified burials is a source of pride for us. Our Veterans Service Agency frequently receives letters from grateful loved ones.”
Added Bonacic: “I am pleased to provide this grant to support improvements to ensure that our veterans receive the dignified final resting place they deserve.”
The grant funds will be used to construct a veterans committal facility that will allow funerals to be conducted in a respectful and honorable manner in line with the traditions of our national Cemetery. The 19-acre Veterans Memorial Cemetery has 12,500 plots. Approximately 3,400 men and women are buried there, including 2,700 veterans.
There are approximately 250 burial services held at the County’s Cemetery each year. Construction of the committal facility will begin in the spring of 2019 and should be completed by the fall.
