Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus is proud to recognize National Farmers Market Week, which runs from August 4th to August 10th.

“Buying local products from any of our great community markets is a wonderful way to support our local agricultural industry,” Neuhaus said. “Orange County is truly fortunate to have so many farmers markets. It’s a great way to eat healthy, know where your food comes from, and ensure a sustainable Orange County.”

This year marks the 20th Annual National Farmers Market Week, which recognizes the vital role that farmers markets play in the agricultural and food economy. During National Farmers Week, markets throughout the County are celebrating with events and give-a-ways, including:

Tuesday, August 6th: The Healthy Orange Farmers Market in Newburgh will feature entertainment for children.

Wednesday, August 7th: The Cornwall Farmers Market will raffle a basket of treats from their vendors.

Friday, August 9th: The Orange County Dairy Princess will visit the Goshen Farmers Market.

Sunday, August 11th: The Highland Falls/West Point Farmers Market will host a Kids Center.

There are 15 farmers markets in Orange County, offering local fruits and vegetables, along with prepared foods, wine, honey, flowers, and everything from meats to quiches. Each market has its own individual character with unique offerings and vendors who take pride in their homegrown products.

Approximately 16 percent of the county’s land is made up of farms and more than 10,000 acres are in vegetable production. The Cornell Cooperative Extension estimates that for every $1.00 spent on farm activities an additional $0.55 is generated in economic activity for a total of $55.3 million. Approximately $155.9 million is generated through agriculture in Orange County each year.  Many farms and farmers markets give back to the community; For example, an average of 200,000 pounds of produce is donated from farmers markets each year to food pantries, soup kitchens and food banks in Orange County.
